Trim Castle and Knowth (Inés Fernández Fernández)

Ready to go!

Today, Saturday, we met at 8:45 at the school because all the group with some russian girls were going to Trim Castle. This castle is a Norman castle on the south bank of the River Boyne in Trim, County Meath, Ireland. It is the largest and the finest Norman castle in Ireland. It was stated by Hugh de Lacy in 1173. Almost uniquely for a Noman castle of this size in Europe, it has hardly been changed at all since it was completed in the 13th century.

When we were there a tour guide told us some things about the history of the castle and then we went to the top of the castle. Before doing it, he said two very important things: 1. The steps aren't the same size (so we had to be very careful). 2. If there were someone who didn't like to go to the top, he or she could stay down (like Claudia did). After we visited the castle we had lunch near there.

Then we went to a place near Drogheda to visit Knowth Megalithic Passage Tomb. It was built over 5000 years ago, probably after the construction of NewGrange and before the construction of Doeth. The Great Mound at Knowth is similar in size to Newgrange and is surrounded by 18 smaller satellite mounds. The Great Mound has two passages with entrances on opposite sides, the western passage is 34 metres long and the eastern passage is 40 metre long, ending with a cruciform chamber.
Before visiting it, we went to a museum that is about the Great Mound. There we have seen how people lived there and how it was built. After that we took a bus to go to the mound. There a guide told us a lot of things, she told that it said the Great Mound was only a Tomb but there are a lot of drawings so people think that it was like a santuary. Then we went inside and the guide finished the tour. We had about 20 minutes to go to the top and take photos.

After that time, we back to the school and then home. Some people of the group, after having dinner, decided to go to the park (that is near the school) but the majority prefered to stay at home.
